Love of the Game Clause

Ever a source of inspirational sports stories, basketball legend Michael Jordan had a deep passion for his work. When he initially signed a contract with the Chicago Bulls, he proposed a unique condition: a love of the game clause.

This clause allowed Jordan to play pick-up, alumni and charity games at his choosing. If he got injured in such games, the Bulls management were not allowed to legally terminate his contract. Thus he could continue to work on and improve his game during the off-season without fear of losing his contract.

In Jordan’s own words: “I needed to play… I used the summer to improve… I needed to be able to play the game of basketball without consequence.”

At the time, his proposal was very singular and his dedication to self betterment and love of the game still ring true with athletes and fans alike today. Do you love your work the way Michael Jordan loved his?
